Having a business can be stressful in a lot of ways`- from the very beginning stages all the way to being operational day to day. There really is no downtime - the ‘to-do’ list creates itself! Safety protocol is one of those things that always need to be attended to. Included in safety is fire protection and flameproofing. According to the FDNY, several requirements are needed in order to be open for business. When it comes to flameproofing, items that are displayed for decorative purposes need to either be inherently flame resistant or treated with fire retardants. Affidavits are distributed to the business owner as proof, and one particular affidavit that’s needed is the affidavit for items that are inherently flame resistant.
In contrast to items that require flameproofing treatment, the objects that are included in the affidavit for inherently flame resistant items have already met the NFPA’s (National Fire Protection Agency) 701 standards. A copy of this document needs to be on file with the Bureau of Fire Prevention and signed by a C-15 Certificate of Fitness holder (such as Brooklyn Flameproofing). A business owner has 10 days from the time the items are installed or displayed to submit this certificate to the Bureau. Business owners are also required to have a copy on site.
In order for the affidavit for inherently flame resistant items to be valid, here’s what is required to be listed on it:
- The name of the person authorizing the affidavit, along with his C-15 Certificate of Fitness number and expiration date.
- The manufacturer of the inherently flame resistant items
- A detailed description of the items along with an explanation of their non-combustible qualities
If there are issues with items or the affidavit, the FDNY will supply a written explanation of the deficiencies. In the meantime, the items in question need to be taken down and removed until they come into compliance with FDNY requirements. Usually, the items will require flameproofing treatments, and then, the C-15 Certificate of Fitness holder will issue a separate affidavit of flame-resistant treatment instead.
Keeping a business running and profitable is no small matter. So many things must be attended to, and being sure you are in compliance with the law is so important. However, you can be sure that when you’re spending time and energy on safety and flameproofing, it is an effort that is well-spent.
