Nothing is more attractive to the public than a stylish, decorated business. It makes customers feel at home and comfortable – which means better business for you. While it’s important to make sure your business location is aesthetically pleasing, it’s also important for it to be safe as well. In particular, fire safety is of priority importance. It’s definitely possible to have a place that’s beautiful and safe, one that meets FDNY standards for fire safety. Today we will discuss how.
According to the FDNY, decorative items can be considered sufficiently flameproofed in one of two ways. items may either be inherently flame resistant in and of themselves, or they must be treated with fire repellents. The ways this happens is by either soaking or coating the object with fireproofing chemicals. Objects and materials that would fall under these guidelines are decorative greens (for Christmas or otherwise), fabric room dividers that separate from ceiling to floor (but not supported by the floor), rugs, drapes, and curtains, etc.
The FDNY allows room for certain exemptions to these guidelines as it pertains to fireproofing. This would have to do with where these objects are as well as what their purposes are. For example, decorative items used to enhance private offices in commercial buildings do not need to be flameproofed. Also, pieces of art that are displayed at art exhibits are also not required to be treated with fire retardants. Along these lines, apartment buildings, schools, shelters, offices, museums, and houses of worship fall under different guidelines as far as what decorative items inside these buildings require treatment.
The rules can seem a little nebulous when you’re unfamiliar with them, but here at Brooklyn Flameproofing, we can walk you through which items at your business require treatment and which ones don’t. We will make sure you are in compliance with all FDNY regulations and your business site is as safe as possible.
