Fire Safety Tips for the Workplace

One of the most tragic things that can happen to a business owner is when there’s a fire on his property. Not only is there a risk for death and injury for those on-site, but there’s also the incredible loss of property and resources to consider. As a business owner, one of the most important things you can do is to protect your establishment from the threat of fire. Today we’ll discuss the many things you can implement to see that your business is as safe as possible from fires.

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) offers many tips that you can easily implement to protect your business from fire. With a few easy steps, you can take fire protection and prevention to the next level at your business site.

Here are some guidelines for you to follow:

1. Inform employees that works areas should be organized and neat. If a fire does break out, having a tidy workspace can minimize how fast the fire will spread as well as assist in keeping the blaze contained.  It’s also easier to evacuate more efficiently if there isn’t clutter to step over or around.

2. There should be regular maintenance checks for all equipment and machinery.  This helps eliminate the threat of a fire due to a malfunctioning wire or mechanism.

3. Regular maintenance checks should also be performed on electric panels. As is the case with equipment and machines, a broken electric panel or deficient outlet can cause a fire also.

4. All chemicals on the premise should be stored properly, according to their Materials Data Sheet. With chemicals, certain conditions for storage, disposal and ventilation need to be adhered to because many chemicals are flammable.

5. Employees should be permitted to smoke only in designated areas outside. If cigarettes are carelessly tossed away in places other than the proper receptacles, a fire could easily break out.

 6. Fire exits and fire extinguisher locations should be known by all employees.  Proper signage is also needed in these areas as well.

While there is certainly more thorough actions a business owner can take for fire safety, just employing these few basics can go a long way in protecting your employees if a fire should ever occur at your workplace. Not only will you preserve human lives, but you’ll also protect your property and other business documents and valuables as well.
