You've heard that those who don't learn from history will be doomed to repeat it? The idea was first introduced by George Santayana, and it's often used as a warning and a wake-up call. A wise, circumspect person will take the time to look at events that have happened in the past and see what lessons there are to be learned. This wake-up call can easily translate into the area of fires that have occurred in American history. Unfortunately, America has seen its share of tragedies due to fire; however, if we are wise, we can look at those horrible events and pull out the lessons that are there for us, so we aren't doomed to make those same mistakes. Today, we will be learning from the Station Nightclub fire in West Warwick, Rhode Island.
The Station Nightclub fire is considered one of the most tragic fires in our nation's history. This awful occurrence took place on February 20, 2003. On this particular night, a live band was playing and as part of their show, fireworks were set off. Unfortunately, the foam insulation that surrounded the stage caught fire from these fireworks, and that was the beginning of the tragic events that would unfold. As the fire began to strengthen, it traveled from the foam to the ceiling, filling the nightclub with clouds of smoke. As the audience realized what was happening, in a panicked frenzy, they bolted for the doors.
By the end of the night, 100 people lost their lives and 230 more sustained injuries.
As awful as this event was, we can learn a few lessons from this tragedy in the hopes that something like this never, ever happens again. First, we note the origin of the fire - the foam insulation that was ignited by the fireworks. This clearly demonstrates how critical it is for flameproofing measures to be in place. NY requires all staging materials to be treated with fire retardants. In addition, hangings, drapes, curtain, and decorations all fall under that same requirement for flameproofing. If those materials in the Station Nightclub had been treated with flame repellents, the foam insulation still might have caught fire, but it would not have contributed to the spread of fire, which would have allowed the audience ample time to safely exit.
However, the lack of flameproofing was not the only factor that contributed to this tragic event. There was no automatic fire sprinkler system installed in the nightclub. Also, there was a lack of sufficient signage that would have directed the people inside to alternate exits, instead of all of them rushing to the main exit. The ultimate result of this hysteria was a blockage at the door, where it was impossible for everyone to safely evacuate. And while the nightclub did not exceed the maximum occupancy limit, the building was full, which made a safe exit for everyone even more difficult.
At Brooklyn Flameproofing, we are aware of the vital importance of flameproofing in any building where the public gathers. It literally can be the fine line between lives lost and lives saved in the event of a fire. In the case of the Station Nightclub, proper flameproofing could have made an enormous difference in the outcome of this awful event.
